The main event is known as Lunes del Cerro, which takes place on the Cerro del Fortin. However, the festival goes beyond that and during the whole month of July there are artistic, gastronomic and cultural activities that allow us to learn more about the eight regions that make up the state of Oaxaca (Coast, Cañada, Mixteca, Sierra Sur, Sierra Norte, Papaloapan, Isthmus and Valles Centrales).
This year, the Guelaguetza will be held on July 25 and August 1.
Origins of the Guelaguetza
The origin of the Guelaguetza comes from pre-Hispanic times, where tribute was paid to Centéotl, goddess of corn, to whom tribute was paid with dances, rites and banquets that lasted several days. Later, in the Colony, this celebration was linked to the Virgen del Carmen, whose patronal feast is on July 16.
The direct antecedents of the celebration as it is known today date back to 1932.
Oaxaca's gastronomy deserves a special mention, as it is one of the most renowned not only in Mexico, but also internationally. When visiting the state it is a must to try, among many other delicacies, tlayudas, tejate, mole amarillo, pan de yema and, of course, a good mezcal.
